Romania: Ten Qualifiers Selected For Selectica Nationala 2017

Ten artists have qualified from the semi-final to the grand final of Romania’s Eurovision selection show Selectica Nationala 2017.

A total of fifteen artists performed on the Selectica Nationala stage tonight, and only ten qualified for the final, which will be held next weekend. The qualifiers were selected by jury voting only. On the jury was Andrei Tudor, Paula Seling, Ovi, Luminita Anghel and Adrian Romcescu. Fans of the Eurovision Song Contest will recognise Paula and Ovi as the countries representatives in both 2010 and 2014, as well as Luminita Anghel who represented Romania in Ukraine in 2005.

Here are the artists that took part tonight (qualifiers in bold):

  2. Cristina Vasiu – Set the Skies on Fire
  3. Tudor Turcu – Limitless
  4. Ramona Nerra – Save Me
  5. Instinct – Petale (Petals)
  6. Eduard Santha – Wild Child
  7. Tavi Colen & Emma – We Own the Night
  8. Zanga – Două sticle (Two bottles)
  9. Ilinca ft. Alex Florea – Yodel It!
  10. Alexandra Crăescu – Hope
  11. Maxim – Adu-ți aminte (Remember)
  12. D-lema – Adventure
  13. MIHAI – I Won’t Surrender
  14. Ana-Maria Mirică – Spune-mi tu (Tell me)
  15. Xandra – Walk On By

The show tonight was hosted by Ioana Voicu and Dan Helciug. Dan Helciug is known for previously performing with Zdob si Zdub, hosted “Popstars” on Romanian television, and has written over ninety hits in the country.

The 15 semi finalists were chosen from 84 hopefuls who had auditioned back in January.  Fans of the Eurovision Song Contest will recognise Mihai Trăistariu, he represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in Athens, Greece with “Tornero”, he also tried to represent Romania last year in Stockholm.

The final will be held on March 5th, where the winner and the next artist to represent Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest will be decided by the public through televote.

At the 1994 contest Dan Bittman finished 21st in the final scoring 14 points, Romania didn’t make it through to another final until 1998. Romania’s best results in the contest are two third place finishes. In 2005 Luminita Anghel & Sistem finished 3rd scoring 158 points, while Paula Seling & Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo with the song “Playing with Fire”. Romania missed the 2016 contest due to TVR being removed from the EBU.
