Latvia have selected Triana Park with their song Line to represent them at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine in May.

The final of Latvia’s Eurovision selection show Supernova 2017 took place tonight, and in the end Triana Park came out on top with their song Line. The four songs that competed in the selection had been selected from a twenty two songs. The winner of the selection tonight was selected by public voting only. The public vote was made up of voting via phone, internet voting and Spotify streams. There was a four-piece jury panel on the show, but none of the three had any say in the final result, and were there to give their opinions on the songs. On the jury were Marie N, Kaspars Roga, Guntars Račs and Intars Busulis.

Taking part in the show tonight were:

  • Triana Park – Line
  • My Radiant You – All I Know
  • The Ludvig – I’m In Love With You
  • Santa Daņeļeviča – Your Breath

During the show, Marie N (the winner of the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest) performed as a guest – as did jury member Intars Busulis. Last year’s selection winner Justs also returned to the selection to perform his new single ‘Message to You’.

This year marks the third year of the ‘Supernova’ format, which has so far seen two successful years of qualification for Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest, with Aminata in 2015 and Justs in 2016. Prior to this, they had not qualified for the grand final since 2008.

Latvia debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000, being the last of the Baltic nations to join the contest. On their debut Brainstorm finished 3rd overall with the song “My Star”. It was in 2002 that Latvia won the contest, with Marie N taking a surprise victory with the song “I Wanna”. Latvia onl participated in 2002 thanks to the withdrawal of Portugal from that year’s contest. Latvia struggled in to the contest after 2002 failing to qualify for the final for six years between 2009 and 2014. In the past two years Latvia has finished 6th in the final and 15th in the final.
