🇸🇰 Slovakia: Rádio Slovensko Manager Hopeful of a Return to Eurovision in the Future

Jindřich Bardon, program manager of Rádio Slovensko, has stated in an interview with Czech media that he is hopeful that Slovakia will return to Eurovision in the future.

The Slovak public broadcaster attended the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in years, with a small delegation in Vienna for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. Jindřich Bardon, program manager of Rádio Slovensko, the Slovak public broadcaster’s main radio station, was among the delegation that was in the Austrian capital for the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Speaking to Deník N, Mr Bardon explained that STVR had looked at a return to the competition in 2026, but that:

“It’s all about the price/performance ratio. It’s not easy for us at the moment in times of consolution”

According to the Czech newspaper, Mr Bardon is stated as believing that Slovakia will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in the future; he has not stated whether STVR could return to the competition in 2027. Slovakia last took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, when Max Jason Mai finished last in the second semi-final with “Don’t Close Your Eyes”.

Bulgaria is the winner of the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. The song that Dara performed in Vienna was called “Bangaranga”. It was written and composed by Anne Judith Wik, Cristian Tarcea, Darina Yotova (Dara), Dimitris Kontopoulos.

The result brings Bulgaria its first victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. DARA is also the first artist since Salvador Sobral in 2017 to win both the public and jury votes. Prior to this, the country’s best result was second place, achieved by Kristian Kostov in 2017. Bulgaria emerged as a dark horse winner, that climbed rapidly in the betting odds after the second rehearsal.

As the winner of the 2026 contest, Bulgaria will host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. Four cities have expressed their interest to host next year’s contest:

To date, North Macedonia has confirmed its return, while the Hungarian Prime Minister has instructed his cabinet to assist with a return to the contest. RTK of Kosovo remains vocal about wishing to participate but lacks EBU membership, while CBC/Radio-Canada attended the 2026 contest on a fact-finding mission.

Since its debut in 1994, Slovakia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest a total of seven times. Slovakia’s best result was in 1996 when Marcel Palonder finished 18th with the song “Kým nás máš”. The country has a history of withdrawing and returning to the contest. They were relegated from the contest in 1995 and 1997. They then withdrew from the contest entirely between 1999 and 2008, and again from 2013 onwards. All Slovak entries between 2009 and 2012 failed to progress from the semi-finals. Their 2011 entry “I’m Still Alive” by Twiins came the closest to qualifying, placing 13th in the semi-final.
