The submissions window for Cân i Gymru 2023 (A song for Wales) has opened as S4C searches for its next winner.
Welsh language singers and performers have until January 3 to submit their songs to compete in the 2023 edition of Cân i Gymru. The winner of Cân i Gymru will take home a prize of £5,000 and represent Wales at the 2023 edition of the Pan Celtic Song Contest.
A total of eight songs will be selected to compete in the final of Cân i Gymru 2023 on March 3. The show will be hosted at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, with the public selecting the winner by televote.
Cân i Gymru has been held since 1969 and has taken place every year since excluding 1973. The 2021 contest was won by Rhydian Meilir with ‘Mae Yna Le’.
What is the Pan Celtic Song Contest?
The Pan Celtic Song Contest has been held annually since 1971 and is part of the Pan Celtic Festival. The aim of the contest is to promote modern Celtic languages and cultures from the six Celtic nations of:
- Brittany
- Cornwall
- Ireland
- Isle of Man
- Scotland
- Wales
Wales is the most successful nation at the competition having won the event a total of 15 times. In contrast the Isle of Man has won the event only once in 2014.
