RTP has announced that a total of 667 songs have been submitted to compete in Festival da Canção 2023.
A total of 667 songs were submitted to the Portuguese selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 through the public call for songs. From the 667 submissions received from the public, 4 will be selected to go through to Festival da Canção 2023. The number of submissions is similar to 2022 when over 600 songs were submitted for the contest.
Festival da Canção 2023 will have 20 songs in the competition, 16 of which will be from authors from various musical areas invited to compete by RTP, and the 4 from the public submissions process. RTP has not yet announced the dates for the selection.
MARO represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy with the song “Saudade, Saudade”. She received 207 points, finishing in 9th position.

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 represented by Antonio Calvario. The country finished last scoring nul points. Prior to 2016, the best result of Portugal was 6th place which came in 1996 when Lucia Moniz performed in Oslo. She scored 92 points, receiving the 12 points from both Norway and Cyprus. Since their debut, Portugal have missed a total of five contests. In 2017, Portugal produced a spectacular win when Salvador Sobral took home the crystal microphone with his song “Amar Pelos Dois.” The 2018 contest was held in Lisbon, Portugal for the first time.
