It’s the final of Songavkeppnin tonight in Iceland and we caught up with first time Eurovision hopeful Karlotta Sigurðardóttir. Karlotta will be performing “Eye of the Storm” tonight in Reykjavik, we spoke about her decision to sing in English, changes to her performance and what Eurovision means to her.
Thank you for talking to us, how are your preparations going ahead of the final this tonight?
The preparations are going great, we are working on changing a few dance steps and some small details in the performance as well. I am also very excited about singing my song in English.
This is the first year that you have participated in Songvakeppnin, what was the experience been like so far?
Yes it is and it is so amazing! I am so glad that I said yes to be the singer of this song. I have learned a lot in just few weeks and I have grown as a singer and a performer.
Your song is written by Ylva & Linda who have written songs for a number of Eurovision selections, what has it been like working and performing with them?
It has been great, it is so fun to see how they have everything on point and know exactly what to do and what not to do. They are very talented and it is an honour to get to have them with me on stage.
The song you are performing is called “Eye Of The Storm”, can you tell us more about it?
Yes, well the Icelandic version is called unstoppable and that is also very relevant for the context of the song. But what it is about is that you have to keep on going no matter what and believe in yourself while doing so because there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Growing up what did Eurovision mean to you and how does it feel being so close to representing your country at the contest?
I loved Eurovision when I was a child and I always learned all the Icelandic songs in no time. Although I was always as disappointed when we did not win. Eurovision is a very big thing in Iceland and you hardly see a car driving down the street when the final competition is on. So it feels very good to be so close from being able to represent your country and I am so excited for Saturday, but I’m not gonna lie it is also very stressful.
Your song was recorded in Icelandic but you have opted to perform it in the final in English, would you ever perform a section of the song in Icelandic if it went to Eurovision?
No i do not think so. Ylva and Linda made the original lyrics in English so the song has always been meant to be performed in english. I made the Icelandic version only for the semi-final round here at home because it is like a tradition here.
Can we expect any changes from your performance in the first semi final for the final on Saturday or is it now just perfecting your semi final performance
We have changed the dance a little bit but otherwise the performance will mostly stay the same 🙂
