Hillerød could become the future home of Denmark’s Eurovision selection show, with the city now in talks with broadcaster DR about hosting the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in either 2028 or 2029. This comes following reports that early discussions are underway as part of a long‑term plan tied to the city’s expanding event infrastructure.
At the centre of Hillerød’s interest is Royal Stage 2, a major extension of the existing Royal Stage arena. The new venue is scheduled for completion in 2027, and would offer increased capacity and upgraded technical facilities – key requirements for staging a live national final of DMGP’s scale.
According to the report, DR requires a 2 million kroner contribution as a condition for hosting the contest. Hillerød’s administration has therefore recommended allocating the amount to DR in the 2027 municipal budget, signalling the city’s intent to position itself as a viable future host.
DR has not yet confirmed any host cities beyond 2027, and no agreement with Hillerød has been finalised. However, the broadcaster is reportedly open to considering the city once the new arena is operational.
If selected, Hillerød would join recent DMGP host cities including Herning, Næstved and Copenhagen.

Denmark debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957 alongside Austria and the United Kingdom. To date, Denmark has won the contest on three occasions, the first being in 1963 when Grethe & Jorgen Ingmann performed “Dansevise”. Denmark won the contest again in 2000, represented by the Olsen Brothers. Their most recent victory came in 2013, when Emmelie de Forest performed “Only Teardrops”.
