Joost Klein has broken streaming records in the Netherlands and Belgium with his Eurovision entry “Europapa”.
Joost Klein’s song “Europapa” was streamed more than 1.2 million times in the Netherlands on Spotify on Friday. The song also proved popular in Belgium, where it secured the number one spot on the charts.
Netherlands
“Europapa”, unveiled during a special broadcast of Arjen Lubach’s Evening Show on Thursday, is experiencing an impressive surge in popularity. On Friday, March 1, the song reached a remarkable milestone by being streamed 1,216,921 times on Spotify in the Netherlands alone.
This achievement surpasses the previous record held for five years by “Arcade”, the song that propelled Duncan Laurence to victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Notably, the record applies to all music available on Spotify, not limited to songs from the Eurovision Song Contest.
Belgium
Europapa’s meteoric rise extends beyond the Netherlands, making waves in Belgium as well. On Friday, the song made an impactful entrance onto the Belgian Spotify charts, claiming the top spot with an impressive 176,149 streams. This marks another record-breaking moment for Klein, as even last year’s winning song, “Tattoo” by Sweden’s Loreen, fell short of these streaming numbers among our southern neighbors.
In terms of records, only Christmas songs have managed to surpass “Europapa” in terms of single-day Spotify streams in Belgium.
Joost Klein will perform for the Netherlands in the Second Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest, on 9 May 2024.
Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper represented the Netherlands in Eurovision 2023 with “Burning Daylight”. They finished 13th in Semi-Final One scoring just 7 points from the televote. This was the Netherlands’ lowest score since 1994 and their first non-qualification since 2015.

The Netherlands debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and has gone on to compete in all bar four contests. To date the Netherlands has won the contest on five occasions; 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975 and most recently 2019. Prior to Duncan Laurence’s victory in Tel Aviv, the Netherlands had been waiting 44 years for their next victory. Duncan Laurence won the contest in Israel with the song “Arcade”.
