Sona Azizova has revealed that she wants to compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with a rock song.
The Azerbaijani representative for Junior Eurovision 2021, Sona Azizova has spoken about the genre she wants to perform with at this December’s contest. 12xal reports that the singer wishes to perform a “rock style song” in Paris if she was given the choice.
If she is unable to compete with a rock song, the singer said that she would like a song that uses traditional instruments, such as tar or saz. Sona was internally selected by İTV to represent Azerbaijan on the nation’s fourth overall appearance at Junior Eurovision and their first since 2018. Sona participated in the first season of The Voice Kids Azerbaijan earlier this year, where she finished second.
Azerbaijan first competed in the contest in 2012 and competed again in 2013 before taking a five-year break from the competition. In 2018 Fidan Huseynova represented the nation on its return with her song “I Wanna Be Like You”. She finished in 16th place.
Azerbaijan joins Albania, Ireland, North Macedonia, and Portugal in returning to the contest this year.

Azerbaijan debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest at the 2012 contest in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The nation had previously attempted to take part in the contest in 2008 but withdrew before the competition took place. The countries record in the contest was not as strong as in the Eurovision Song Contest. Azerbaijan’s best result came in 2013 on their last appearance in the contest where Rustam Karimov placed 7th with the song “Me and My Guitar”. Azerbaijan withdrew from the contest in 2014 for unspecified reasons.
