The submissions window for Cân i Gymru 2021 (A song for Wales) has opened as S4C searches for its next winner.
Welsh language singers and performers have until January 3 to submit their songs to compete in the 2020 edition of Cân i Gymru. The winner of Cân i Gymru will take home a prize of £5,000 and represent Wales at the 2021 edition of the Pan Celtic Song Contest if it takes place.
Cân i Gymru has been held since 1969 and has taken place every year since excluding 1973. Last year the 50th edition of the competition which translates as ‘Song for Wales’ was won by Elidyr Glyn with the song “Fel Hyn ‘da Ni Fod”.
What is the Pan Celtic Song Contest?
The Pan Celtic Song Contest has been held annually since 1971 and is part of the Pan Celtic Festival. The aim of the contest is to promote modern Celtic languages and cultures from the six Celtic nations of:
- Brittany
- Cornwall
- Ireland
- Isle of Man
- Scotland
- Wales
Wales is the most successful nation at the competition having won the event a total of 15 times. In contrast the Isle of Man has won the event only once in 2014.
