The Head of Delegation for France has confirmed that the Eiffel Tower will be illuminated as part of Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris is the landmark that France will illuminate as part of Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light. As part of the show on May 16, nations across Europe will be illuminating one landmark which will be shown in the broadcast as a segment called ‘Europe Shine a Landmark’.
The landmarks confirmed so far are:
- Belgium – Atomium
- Cyprus – Presidential Palace
- France – Eiffel Tower
- Greece – The Acropolis
- Lithuania – Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre
Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light will be broadcast live across Europe on May 16 hosted by Chantal Janzen, Edsilia Rombley and Jan Smit. The show will pay tribute to the forty one acts who had been due to compete in Eurovision 2020 and feature past Eurovision participants. The show will also look at the people of Europe affected by the coronavirus and aid workers who are fighting this crisis.

France was one of seven countries to participate in the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Since then they have participated in every contest aside from 1974 and 1982. Their withdrawal in 1974 was caused by the death of President Georges Pompidou, while 1982’s withdrawal was a result of TF1 declining to enter the contest. France has won the contest on five occasions, the most recent being in 1977 when Marie Myriam performed “L’oiseau et l’enfant”. France’s best result of the 2000s came in 2001 when Natasha St-Pier finished 4th in Copenhagen, Denmark.
