The tenth competitive gala of Operación Triunfo took place on last night. The two nominated contestants sang to stay in the Academy while the other six contestants aimed to avoid being nominated by the jury.
Joining the jury as a guest judge this week was writer Paco Tomás. The guest performers this week Ana Belén and Cepeda, who finished ninth in the previous series of Operación Triunfo.
Elimination
Last week’s nominated contestants, María and Marta, each had to perform a song of their choice. María chose “Because the Night” by Patti Smith while Marta chose “Like A Prayer” by Madonna. With 57% of the public vote, Marta was saved while María became the ninth contestant to be expelled from the Operación Triunfo Academy.
Nomination
After María’s elimination, the remaining seven contestants (including Marta) were evaluated by the jury. For the first time this series, the public could not a favourite contestants to save from nomination.
The performances by the contestants who were not nominated last week were as follows:
- Sabela – “Te necesito” (Amaral)
- Alba Reche – “Lost on You” (LP)
- Miki – “Promesas que no valen nada” (Los Piratas)
- Julia- “A que no me dejas” (Alejandro Sanz)
- Natalia – “The Scientist” (Coldplay)
- Famous – “Uptown Funk” (Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars)
The jury chose to nominate Marta, Sabela, Alba Reche and Miki. The Academy staff chose to save Alba Reche and the contestants chose to save Miki. Marta and Sabela were nominated and one of them will leave during next week’s gala. Any contestants not nominated by the end of next week’s gala will compete in the final on December 15. Also, the jury will only nominate three contestants next week with only the Academy staff having the power to save one from nomination.
A Eurovision Gala of Operación Triunfo will be held in January to select the Spanish representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Any of the 16 contestants that entered the Academy can be selected for Eurovision, regardless of their placement in the competition.
Amaia y Alfred were selected through last year’s edition to represent Spain in Lisbon. They finished 23rd in the final with a total of 61 points, following their performance of “Tu canción”.
Actually, the grand final is December 19th.
