RTVE, the Spanish national broadcaster, has revealed details about the Eurovision Gala of Operación Triunfo, in which the Spanish entry for Tel Aviv will be chosen.
An open call for songs will be launched on November 1. Those submitting their entries may also pick their preferred singer between the 16 participants of Operación Triunfo 2018 (including those eliminated before the gala) although their choice is not binding. Entries can be submitted up until November 15. RTVE will also reach out to professional artists and songwriters to submit entries. From both the public and private call for songs, 10 entries will be chosen from each. Entries must not have been published before September 1 and must contain lyrics in one of the co-official languages of Spain (Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician).
Once all 20 songs are selected, the Operación Triunfo contestants will record them, and an online vote will begin on rtve.es. The three most popular acts will directly qualify to the Eurovision Gala, while a panel composed of music experts and two professors at the Academy will select up to seven other songs.
The Eurovision Gala will be held in January. Public voting alone will decide the winner. However, unlike last year, there will only be one round of voting.
Amaia y Alfred were selected through last year’s edition to represent Spain in Lisbon. They finished 23rd in the final with a total of 61 points, following their performance of “Tu canción”.
Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest
Spain debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and has competed annually since. Spain has won the contest on two occasions the first being in 1968 and the second time in 1969. 1969 is the only year where more than one song has won the contest, the 1969 contest saw a four-way tie between Spain, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Since 2000 Spain has only managed to finish in the top.10 on five occasions, the last time being in 2014 with Ruth Lorenzo. However, the country has finished 20th or below on nine occasions, the worst placement being 26th in 2017.
