Australian broadcaster Blink TV has revealed more information regarding their Junior Eurovision performance.
Yesterday Jael Wena took to the stage for her second rehearsal at the Minsk Arena. Talking to Eurovoix.com, Blink TV has revealed the reasoning behind Jael Wena’s staging:
Our staging this year is very much centred around Jael herself, as she has such an incredible voice and stage presence, we felt that we didn’t need to embellish her performance much. She will be standing on a simple platform, with the lighting helping to convey the meaning of the song.
The broadcaster also mentioned that lighting plays a big part in their performance:
We start in a quieter, more inward-focused place with the lighting and performance to start the first verse with, and as the song reaches the chorus, we allow the focus to become more outwards, as Jael’s words reach out to the audience to inspire them to be champions in their own right. We’ll be using the full potential of the lighting setup to rotate lights out to the audience to create an explosion of light and colour and allow Jael to really express herself on stage.
It was also revealed that Australia’s spokesperson will be provided by the team at BTRC, the Belarusian broadcaster.
Who is Jael Wena?
Twelve-year-old Jael Wena was born on 22nd December 2005 in Melbourne, Australia. Jael began singing at the age of four, and by the time she was nine she had already recorded songs in her father’s recording studio. The young singer’s most notable achievement is winning the top award at the Fast Track Talent Showcase for three years in a row.
2018 will be the fourth time that Australia has participated in Junior Eurovision. In 2017, 13 year old Isabella Clarke, also from Melbourne, finished in third place in the contest which was held in Tbilisi, Georgia. She scored a total of 172 points for her performance of “Speak Up.”
In 2018, Junior Eurovision will once again be broadcast in Australia on ABC ME and joining Jael will be host Grace Koh, plus Pip Rasmussen and Lawrence Gunatilaka.

Australia debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, the same year as their Eurovision Song Contest debut. The country is yet to win the contest, and their best result was in 2017, when Isabella Clarke performed her song “Speak Up” and received 3rd place with 172 points. Australia’s worst result comes from their debut in 2015, when Bella Paige and her song “My Girls” finished in 8th place with 64 points. Australia have been present at every contest since their debut.
