Sweden: 71,000 Viewers for Eurovision Young Musicians 2018

A combined total of 71,000 viewers watched as the final of Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 was aired twice by SVT this past weekend.

61,000 viewers watched the final of Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 on SVT2 on Saturday night, with a further 10,000 viewers watching the rebroadcast on Sunday afternoon.

The number of viewers is down 77,000 over the 2016 contest in Cologne, Germany despite the additional airing of the competition on Sunday. SVT2 opted to air the final of Eurovision Young Musicians on delay with broadcasts taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Six of Europe’s most talented young musicians took part in the final of the 19th edition of the contest, these were:

  1. Birgitta Elisa Oftestad (Norway) – Elgar – Cello Concerto, 4th movement
  2. Nikola Pajanović (Slovenia) – Tchaikovsky – Violin Concerto, 3rd movement
  3. Indi Stivín (Czech Republic) – Stivín – Bohemian Suite for Double Bass, 2nd & 3rd movements
  4. Mira Foron (Germany) – Sibelius – Violin Concerto, 3rd movement
  5. Máté Bencze (Hungary) – Ibert – Concerto da Camera for Saxophone
  6. Ivan Bessonov (Russia) – Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No 1, 3rd movement – 1st

Each of the six finalists will performed alongside the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Each musician performed for 12 minutes and hoped to impress the three jury members who decided tonight’s winner. The jury members are;

  • Sir James MacMillan
  • David Watkin
  • Marin Alsop
  • Anna Meredith
  • Andrew Moore

Sweden debuted in Eurovision Young Musicians at the third edition of the competition in 1986, they were one of five countries to debut in 1986. To date Sweden has won the competition once, in 2006 Andreas Brantelid won the contest performing Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, 1st movement by J. Haydn, he beat off competition from seventeen other countries. In 2016 Sweden was represented by Eliot Nordqvist, he did not place within the top three.
