A concerted effort is being put into ensuring the Greek diaspora vote during this years Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Demy has today visited the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to encourage support for her at this years Eurovision Song Contest. Alongside Demy’s visit a meeting was held between the Director General of ERT, the Head of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad as well as other members of the organisation.
Greece alongside Moldova have been targeting their diaspora across Europe in the hope that they can help push their entrants into the Eurovision final this year in Ukraine. There are estimated to be around 3-4 million ethnic Greeks residing across Europe, ranging from 700,000 Greeks residing in Cyprus to around 50 in Croatia.
Greece are performing in the first semi final on May 9, they are aiming to return to the Eurovision final this year having not qualified for the final last year in Stockholm for the first time ever. Argo with their song “Utopian Land” only managed to garner 22 points from the televote, this included 12 points from Cyprus, 7 from Armenia and 3 from Russia.
Demy was internally selected to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest, with her song being selected by the public. “This Is Love” won the Greek national final by a margin of over 60% of the votes. The song received 70% of the public televote and 89% of the jury vote. The song has been composed by Dimitris Kontopoulos, while the lyrics were written by Romy Papadea and John Ballard.
