Ukraine: Jamala To Stockholm

Crimean Tatar will be heard for the first time at ESC

Jamala has won the Ukrainian national final today in a very close race with the group The Hardkiss. She won the selection on her second attempt after finishing 3rd in the scandalous 2011 final. Her song โ€œ1944โ€ is being sung in memory of the Crimean tatars, Jamalaโ€™s ancestors, that were expulsed from Crimea to Central Asia in that year. The song is half English and half Crimean Tatar, a Turkic language.

  • 1st: Jamala โ€“ 1944 (6 televoting, 5 jury)
  • 2nd: The Hardkiss โ€“ Helpless (5 televoting, 6 jury)
  • 3rd: SunSay โ€“ Love Manifest (4 televoting, 4 jury)

A total of 382,000 votes were cast (only one vote per telephone was allowed) which is a record in the history of the Ukraine and the jury was made up of Ruslana, Konstantin Meladze and Andrey Danylko alias Verka Serduchka. In case of a draw, the televoting caused a higher rank. Jamala will sing in the second half of the second Semi Final on May 12th in Stockholm.
