It’s just hours to go until the final of the Swiss selection and we bring you our final interview with the hopefuls. Kaceo qualified from the Swiss-French selection and are hoping their humour filled song can make it all the way to Stockholm.
May I start by saying thank you for talking to us, can you tell us more about Kaceo?
Thank you for taking time to learn a little more about us Anthony! We are coming from different musical styles : ska, balkanic, metal, rock, songwriting, folk. And this mess creates Kaceo on stage. We started gigs in 2013. In 2015 we released two EPs, “Ne pas jeter” in January and “Déchets spéciaux” in September (By the way, you can download our tracks for free, it’s Creative Commons). We released two videos “Ar-Men” and “Disque d’or”. And we are now new working hard for TV show and also composing songs and looking forward to getting absolutely live on stage next spring !
Originally you were not in the final for the Swiss selection, when you were told that you had replaced Stephanie how did you feel?
Is everyone still available ? (as we were told first that we were not qualified, so we planned the next months accordingly.) Funny fact, we asked for a couple of hours to check, but the press release was sent before we could answer. And it was not a nice feeling to replace someone… So it was strange, feeling that we are not at our place… in french we would say: like the fifth wheel of the coach”. But also excited to discover and learn from this adventure!
Your song is all about getting a Gold record, what was the inspiration behind the song?
It is not really about getting a gold record, it is more about music becoming more and more a simple standardized entertainment product; and the role of the consumer and artist in this industry. Does consumers create those kind of hypersexualized artist or it is a kind of mass manipulation because of the zapping world we are living in now? So we choos to talk about the hypersexualization of the music industry, which falls under a schizophrenic puritanism : a sanitized speech but voyeur shows. The original song (here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-GT2t68TjQ) that we released in September has a cynical and crude approach. Yet it was descriptive. It wanted to put explicit words on what is usually implicitly shown on TV. We also prepared another version, as requested by SRF/RTS : we changed the lyrics (in the end changing or cutting 50% from the orginial song) to be ESC-compliant for a 99% irony-free version that falls under 3min00. When you wrote the song did you ever have Eurovision in mind or was it a decision take afterwards?
Unconsciously, probably.
You are the only artists in the Swiss selection singing not in English, did you ever think of singing in English?
You have to be in front of Swiss TV this Saturday evening! You will hear us singing “video killed the radio stars”. But for our composition, we admit that the meaning of our songs are less understandable for non french speaking people. But as our mother tongue is french, and it is really hard to be sure that the message is correct in a foreign language.
Switzerland has not sent a song to Eurovision in French since 2010, do you think it’s time to get a song in French back on the Eurovision stage?
We think that Eurovision should be an opportunity to show others countries a little part of the culture of our country… It is also an opportunity to show something different from the standardized music we can listen all day in mainstream media. For us it is not a matter of French. If we had time and sufficient space in our singer’s brains (and talent) we’d love to sing in Roman or Swiss-German or Swiss-Italian. We were sad that Platzhirsch was not selected. Those guys were really fun and full of swissness.
What would it mean for a band like you to make it all the way to the stage in Stockholm?
Can really swiss people take the risk to send “the crazy ones” to the final?
