After speaking to Brooke Borg a newcomer to MESC we caught up with a singer who has taken to the MESC stage four times already Corazon Mizzi. Corazon told us how she didn’t orginally plan to take part in MESC but that the beauty of her song convinced her to take part.
Firstly it’s a pleasure to speak to you, I’d like to start by asking you what it was that drew you into singing?
I always loved music and started off with ballet dancing and playing the piano. One day I auditioned for my school choir and my teachers were really surprised with my voice. From then onwards I started taking singing lessons and always let my passion lead me to where I have arrived today.
Who do you draw inspiration from and what style music would you say explains you as a singer?
I am mostly drawn to the Italian music scene and I find a lot of inspiration from there, especially when writing my own original songs in Maltese. However when it comes to singing I try to be unique and different from everybody else. I don’t like it when singers try to make their voice sound like somebody else’s – I’d say that’s the easiest thing to do: to copy. But I have tried to develop my own unique timbre and it’s an honour when people tell me: I recognise you straight away when I hear your song come on the radio.
This will be the fifth time that you will be taking to the stage of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, what was it that made you decide to submit a song into MESC this year?
Actually I had decided to take a break from the MESC this year as it’s a very hectic year juggling my profession, my TV programme and my singing commitments. However when Georgios, Sara and Jonas sent me Falling Glass, I felt compelled to give it a try. It sounded so beautiful to my ears and very right for me, in many ways I cannot explain with words. So it was the beauty of this particular song that lured me into the competition this year.
Last year you performed “Secrectly” which sadly didn’t make it through to the final, is your aim this year to make it through to the final or is it just being on the stage the reward for you?
Definitely being on stage is very rewarding and I am not the competitive type so I never took this badly, but always in the correct sport of the competition. If it passes through to the finals, all the better of course 🙂
Your song is called “Falling Glass” can you tell us what the song means to you?
This is a very meaningful and powerful song for me, especially because it manages to breakthrough a new style of singing and performing for me. The audience is used to me singing ballads and this year, they will be inevitably surprised! This song changes my style but still makes excellent use of my vocal timbre and abilities and so I’m happy not to be wearing off what I am best at.
The song is written by Jonas Gladnikoff, Georgios Kalpakidis and Sara Ljunggren what has it been like to work with a team with such huge Eurovision experience?
Their experience shines through. Even though being so far away, we communicate very well and they are a very creative and inspiring team who have always valued my ideas and input in the song. It’s really great working with such professionals!
Malta is a nation that is mad about the Eurovision Song Contest, what would you say growing up in Malta is the Eurovision entry from Malta that stands out the most?
Probably it’s ‘Little Child’ by Mary Spiteri.
