After speaking to Stefan Galea we caught up with the lovely Brooke Borg. Brooke is participating in MESC for the first time with her song “Golden”, we talked about what drew her into singing, the meaning of her song and what she would tell her younger self.
It’s a couple of weeks on since you were announced as a semi finalist in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest has it sunk in yet?
Well, I would be lying if I say yes, I have my days. Some days it feels real, others it feels completely surreal.
This is your first time attempting to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest but when you were younger you tried to represent Malta at Junior Eurovision, what was that like for you?
Back then I was challenging myself, trying to find myself as a singer and testing my limits and capabilities. It was an unforgettable experience, that taught me so much.
What was it as a child that drew you into singing?
I must say, it was my brother who drew me into singing. When he was younger he used to sing at various contests, venues etc and I pretended I was his backing vocalist. That was the point I started showing an interest in music and particularly singing. After much nagging, my parents had no choice but enroll me for vocal lessons when I was 5 years old.
What was it that made you decide to submit a song into the Malta Eurovision Song Contest?
My decision was based completely on my song. I always promised myself that I would only ever submit a song if I 100% believed in it. I believe in my song, Golden, and its message.
You are one of a few artists in the selection who is a songwriter for their entry, how important is it for you to be involved in the creation of your song?
I think it is VERY important. It is very important as a singer to be involved, as ultimately we need to get the message across to the listeners and viewers through the execution of the song. Golden, for example, represents my views and what I feel most passionate about and I think that it does an incredible job of representing me.
The song you want to take to the 61st Eurovision Song Contest is called “Golden”, can you tell us more about it?
Golden is about not letting people’s opinions of you become your reality. It is very easy to fall in a trap of wanting to be someone else or feel uncomfortable with who you really are, because of society. Golden expresses the importance in pursuing what the heart ultimately wants together with being happy within your own skin.
You worked with Aidan O’Connor, Christian Schneider, Sara Biglert on the song what has it been like working with them?
Incredible. I was in contact with Aidan at first, who introduced me to Chris and Sara. It then evolved in a trip to Sweden, co writing Golden in just a weekend. I Loved every second, working with the Golden team and also visiting Stockholm for the first time.
Malta is a very musical island, what is it do you feel that makes the Maltese such a musical nationality?
I feel that us Maltese are always wanting to have fun with both friends or family and music is a great way of bringing people together. Here in Malta, we have numerous musical events throughout the year which gives us the opportunity to enjoy a great night out.
If there was one thing you’d say to the younger you what would that be?
To believe in yourself, and to do whatever your heart desires without any limitations from friends and society. And most of all, to be comfortable in your own skin.
