Here’s an interview I conducted with Katrīna Cīrule, who is one of the acts that is vying to represent Latvia at Eurovision in May. Here’s what she had to say!
Can you tell us how you got into becoming a musician?
I have been singing ever since I remember myself. I started as a soloist on 2007, when performing soulful house in a collaboration with great Latvian DJ’s. But the basic I have vocally and spiritually comes from the genre called Gospel music. I have been one of the lead vocalists in Riga Gospel Choir since I was 15. And still it gives the best practice, joy and fulfillment to sing a genre that goes so much deeper that just nice melodies or fun beats. It is my function – to be thankful for the life I live and to live it to the max. Gospel music really gives the freedom to be joyful.
We can hear your song for ‘Supernova 2015’ Bass on YouTube, can you tell us what its all about?
Bass is a feeling that we get from the person we admire, love and feel passionate about. Bass is a vibration that resonates inside me when I am near the person I like so much. And that’s why I say – I love it, I love it! And – I wrote the song as a love letter to all the bass players, because I truly love professional bass players.
When listening to your song ‘Bass’, I can imagine being in a cafe or restaurant! Where do you draw inspiration from in your music?
I can get it on the street, in a cafe, when I am all alone or surrounded by people, when I am happy or sad. Inspiration just comes. And it is not something I can control that easy 🙂
Can you give us an insight into how your song will be performed on stage at ‘Supernova 2015’?
It will be fancy, with a glamor and style.
Do you have any favourite songs in the Eurovision Song Contest?
Sure! My favorite was The Common Linnets – Calm after the Storm.
Do you have any favourite songs that have represented your home country of Latvia in Eurovision?
I’d say I have felt really excited when I performed “What for?” together with Latvian finalist Aisha in Eurovion 2010, in Oslo, Norway as a backvocalist. That was a great experience and unforgettable feeling to be a part of such a huge event.
What would it mean to you to represent Latvia at the Eurovision in Vienna in May?
It would mean – a huge responsibility, huge joy and huge thrill. I would be honoured to to that.
Katrīna will compete in the first Supernova heat tomorrow on 1st February. The final of Supernova 2015 is on 22nd February.
