It’s less than 48 hours to go until Cyprus select their Eurovision 2015 participant. We caught up with the guys from Minus One to find out more about their journey to represent Cyprus in Vienna, take a read below.
Congratulations on making it to the final of Cyprus’ Eurovision selection, how are you feeling?
We’re very excited that we made it to the final and are looking forward to the live show! Whatever we do, we give 100% and focus all our positive energy there. This competition is no exception, and like everything else, we’ll put all we’ve got into it and, above all, enjoy the process.
What would it mean for you as a band to be able to represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2015 in Vienna, Austria?
It would be a great honor for us to represent Cyprus with a song that we believe is something “unusual” compared to the songs that usually represent Cyprus in the contest. And of course, as a band already counting two albums of original material, participating in Eurovision would be an amazing opportunity to showcase our work and take the next step by building new collaborations with international artists.
Can you tell us more about how Minus One began and who you guys are?
Minus One is also known as Marianne’s Wish. Minus One is the name we use for our live shows as a cover band in Cyprus, while our original material, counting two albums to date, is promoted under Marianne’s Wish. The band was formed back in 2011, by guitarist and music producer George Solonos & drummer Chris J, while working on Tommy Lee’s work for Methods of Mayhem. Later on we teamed up with talented frontman Francois Micheletto, bassist Antonis Loizides and guitarist Constantinos Americanos. We recently toured in the United States and Europe, performing, among others, at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas, and in well-known venues in Los Angeles, New York and London. Our band has also won the National Hard Rock Battle of the Bands competition, and ranked 8th out of 12 000 artists worldwide. We are now planning a European tour, regardless of the outcome of the national Eurovision contest.
The song you want to take to Eurovision is called “Shine”, can you tell us more about it?
The song was composed by George Solonos, with lyrics by the same, in collaboration with Marina Solonos and Francois Micheletto. It’s a solid rock song with a positive message for love and unity, but also spiced up with the sound of baglamas, an indigenous Greek instrument that stands out for it’s bright, happy, “shiny” sound. A sound that really matched the title and meaning of the song.
When you submitted “Shine” into the Cypriot selection, did you ever think that you would be in the final of the contest?
We hoped that it would be, since we put much love, effort and energy into it. We knew that it would be something out of the ordinary for the Cyprus audience, so that was a risk we took but, at the end of the day, we submitted something that we think is representative of who we are and what we do. As long as it’s genuine, it’s bound to go well.
What was it that made you decide to sing in English instead of Greek?
All the band’s original material is in English, since the audience for the kind of music we play is mostly abroad. And since the lyrics spread an important message, we felt that it should be told in a language that reaches more people than our own language would. But we made up for not using Greek in the lyrics by using a Greek instrument, that speaks Greek through music, the universal language.
As a band what would you say your favourite Cypriot Eurovision entry is and why?
We love Lisa Andreas, with “Stronger every minute”. It was an honest, genuine, pure ballad with nice melody, simply presented and well performed.
Finally do you have anything you would like to say to the readers of Eurovoix.com?
Whether or not we are selected to represent Cyprus in ESC 2015, we would be happy to see you all during our European tour, which we are currently planning! See you all soon!
We wish the guys from Minus One all the best for the final on Saturday, you can watch the official lyric video for the song below:
