Joanna Lagrave is one of three acts in contention to represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. We caught up with Joanna earlier in the week to find out more about her and her aim to represent France in Copenhagen.
First off can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your music?
My love for music began when I was a baby, I don’t even remember exactly when, but I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was a child. I remember dancing and singing in my room imagining a big stadium audience in front of me when i was only 8 years old.
Now you are one of three artists that is trying to represent France at Eurovision 2014, what has it been like in the past weeks since Les Chansons D’Aboard went out?
I was really excited and I was thinking about the challenge. I wanted to give my best to convince people to send me to represent France. I love challenges.
Your song is called “Ma Liberte”, can you tell us more about it?
Ma liberté is a powerful song full of strength. it goes crescendo. It’s talking about love, but not in the traditional way.
It’s a destructive love. So the person who live that can’t go so she wants her man to do like he’s not in love anymore. She wants to go on but she asked for her freedom.
I think many of our readers will be wanting to know how you got involved in this years French selection?
It was not directly my idea, my manager decided to send this song because he saw my reaction when I was listening to it. I was crying and I was like “it’s my song”. my sentiments, my feelings was in that song like i wrote it.
This is the first time since 2007 that France are holding a national selection where the French public have a say in who goes to Eurovision, what do you think of the decision to return to a national selection?
I think it’s the best thing to do. French people love to give their opinion so letting them chose which candidate they want to send to Copenhagen is a good thing.
You released an English version of your song which has different lyrics to the French version of the song. This leads me to ask whether you would if you win decided to sing in both French and English?
The English version was a gift for my fans or Eurovision fans. If I go to Copenhagen I will sing in french. If it was a personal concert I would have sung in English but i have to represent my country so I’ll sing in french.
One of our readers was wanting to know, what is your favourite Eurovision entry and why?
My favorite entry was Loreen Euphoria, because her music and the show was modern like i love. I discovered Loreen this night and since she won Eurovision I follow her career.
Arianna in Canada, also asks if you weren’t a singer what job would you like to have?
I think I would have been a painter a designer or a tagger.
Finally, do you have anything you’d like to say to the readers of Eurovoix.com?
I hope To meet you all in Copenhagen; to show what I can do. I still have surprises, you didn’t saw the whole part of me.
