La Zarra has been selected to represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool.
La Zarra will represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. The news was revealed today during a press conference at France Télévisions headquarters in Paris. La Zarra commented on her participation:
“I am very proud to have the chance to perform my song in front of millions of viewers around the world. I am a great admirer of the most beautiful French voices such as Edith Piaf, Barbara, Dalida, but also Céline Dion, and I am so excited to make all Europeans discover my song which I hope will become theirs.
I am very honored to represent France at Eurovision, the most iconic song contest in the world.”
Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Head of Delegation for France, added:
“From our first meeting, La Zarra won us over! What an honour to welcome this great artist in the Eurovision family!
Mysterious, inspiring, charismatic, La Zarra is a woman and a modern artist with a chic French signature! A voice that transports us through time by making us travel to different eras. From Barbara through Brel or Dalida to Marylin Monroe, La Zarra is an iconic artist who will carry the colors of France in Liverpool in May 2023 during the largest song contest in the world.”
Fatima Zahra Hafdi, better known as La Zarra, was born to a Moroccan family in Montreál, Canada. She first rose to fame as a featured artist on the song “Printemps blanc” (White spring) by rapper Niro in 2016. She released her debut solo single “Tu t’en iras” (You’ll go away) in 2021. Later that year, she was nominated for Francophone Revelation of the Year at the NRJ Awards.
The song that La Zarra will perform in Liverpool will be released at a later date.
In 2022, Alvan and Ahez represented France with “Fulenn”. They finished 24th in the Grand Final scoring a total of 17 points. 9 points came from the juries and 8 points from the public televote.

France in the Eurovision Song Contest
France was one of seven countries to participate in the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Since then they have participated in every contest aside from 1974 and 1982. Their withdrawal in 1974 was caused by the death of President Georges Pompidou, while 1982’s withdrawal was a result of TF1 declining to enter the contest. France has won the contest on five occasions, the most recent being in 1977 when Marie Myriam performed “L’oiseau et l’enfant”. France’s best result of the 21st century came in 2021 when Barbara Pravi finished second in Rotterdam.
