The eighteenth artist in our Who Is series for Eurovision 2022 is Emma Muscat from Malta.
Emma Muscat was born on 27th November 1999 in St. Julian’s, Malta. She showed an interest in music at a young age and later decided to enroll at the University of Performing Arts. The singer released her first single “Alone” in 2016, and has since released a further seven singles, a studio album, and an EP.
In 2018, she began working more in Italy, having participated in the talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi, which also secured her contract with Warner Music Italy. Her 2020 single “Sangria”, featuring the Italian rapper Astol, went certified gold in Italy.
This year Emma took part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in February. With her song “Out of Sight”, she finished in 1st place with 92 points, and will therefore represent Malta at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Italy.
On 14th March, Emma revealed that she will take her new single “I Am What I Am” to the contest in May, instead of “Out of Sight”. This is not the first time that Malta has opted to change its song following a national selection. In 2016, Ira Losco won MESC with “Chameleon”, however, Malta then opted to change the song for “Walk On Water”.
Emma Muscat will perform in the first half of the second semi-final on May 12.

Malta debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 and was represented by Joe Grech and the song “Marija L-Maltija”, which finished last. Malta competed again in 1972 and 1975 but then withdrew until their return in 1991. During the 1990s Malta only once finished outside of the top 10, and in 1998 they came within just 7 points of victory. It was Chiara who brought the country their 3rd place finish in 1998, and who went on to finish in 2nd at the 2005 contest in Kyiv. The only other artist to finish 2nd for Malta is Ira Losco, who was 12 points away from victory in 2002. They are the longest and most successful participating country never to have won the Eurovision Song Contest.
