The public broadcasters of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have called for the suspension of Russian broadcasters’ membership of the European Broadcasting Union.
Latvijas Televīzija (LTV), Latvijas Radio (LR), Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) and Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR) have jointly called for the suspension of Russian broadcaster’s membership of the European Broadcasting Union. The call comes following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on February 4.
The four broadcasters join UA:PBC of Ukraine and AVROTROS of the Netherlands in urging the EBU to suspend its Russian members. TVP of Poland has also called on the EBU to respond to UA:PBC’s request to suspend the Russian broadcasters from the EBU.
Currently, three Russian broadcasters hold full membership of the European Broadcasting Union, they are:
- Channel One
- All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK)
- Radio Dom Ostankino
In the past hour, the European Broadcasting Union has removed Russia from competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. Before the announcement from the EBU, ten broadcasters had publicly called for Russia to be removed from the contest of which Finland and Estonia‘s broadcasters had threatened to withdraw from the contest if Russia was not removed.
