The thirty-second artist to feature in our Who Is series for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest is Vasil from North Macedonia.
Vasil Garvanliev was born on November 2nd 1987 in Strumica, North Macedonia. He started his musical journey at age 7, performing at some of North Macedonia’s most popular children’s festivals. Soon after, he moved with his family to the United States, where he continued his career as a soloist at the Chicago Children’s Choir. He continued his musical training in Toronto and Milan.
Vasil returned to North Macedonia in 2018 and launched his own pop career there with three successful singles: “Gjerdan” (Necklace), “Patuvam” (Travelling) and “Mojata Ulica” (My street). He was also a backing singer for Tamara Todevska in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv.
Vasil was internally selected by MRT to represent North Macedonia at the 2020 contest. He was due to sing “You” before the contest ultimately was cancelled in March last year.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Vasil would indeed represent his country at the 2021 contest. “Here I Stand” was written and composed by Vasil himself. The arrangement and production were completed by Borce Kuzmanovski and Davor Jordanovski.
Vasil will perform in the first half of the first semi-final on May 18th.

North Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest
North Macedonia debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998, however, two years earlier they attempted to participate but was knocked out in the pre-qualifying round. In 2016 they were represented by Kaliopi for a second time with the song “Dona”, she missed out on the final finishing in 11th in her semi-final. North Macedonia’s best result to date is a 7th place finish in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest represented by Tamara Todevska and the song “Proud”.
