RTP is set to make an announcement regarding Festival da Canção on Friday the broadcaster has announced.

The Portuguese broadcaster RTP is set to make an announcement regarding the 2021 edition of Festival da Canção this Friday. The details of the announcement have not been revealed, however it is expected that the composers competing in the contest will be revealed on this date.

Twenty songs are set to compete in Festival da Canção 2021. Of the 20 competing songs, RTP will invite composers to compose 18 of them. The remaining two will be selected from a public submission. Song submissions for the public selection closed on November 25.

The general format of the selection will remain the same as last year, with two semi-finals and a final. However, 20 songs will compete instead of 16, meaning that five will qualify from each semi-final.

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 represented by Antonio Calvario, the country finished last scoring nul points. Prior to 2016, the best result of Portugal was 6th place which came in 1996 when Lucia Moniz performed in Oslo. She scored 92 points, receiving the 12 points from both Norway and Cyprus. Since their debut, Portugal have missed a total of five contests. In 2017, Portugal produced a spectacular win when Salvador Sobral took home the crystal microphone with his song “Amar Pelos Dois.” The 2018 contest was held in Lisbon, Portugal for the first time.
