S4C has announced that the auditions for Côr Cymru 2021, the Welsh selection for Eurovision Choir have been delayed.
In a statement released on social media the Welsh broadcaster has announced that auditions for Côr Cymru 2021 will not be taking place in December as previously announced. Citing COVID-19, the broadcaster states that auditions are to be held at a later date, with more details to be announced in due course.
Five categories of choir will compete in Côr Cymru 2021:
- Children’s Choirs – 16 years old and younger
- Youth Choirs – 25 years old and younger
- Mixed Voice Choirs
- Equal Voices Choirs
- Show Choirs
A round of auditions will take place, at which point a jury will then select four choirs from each category to compete in televised semi-finals. The semi-finals will be held from February 19 to 21, with the winner of each semi-final receiving £1,000.
The final of Côr Cymru 2021 will take place on May 2, 2021 at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. A panel of judges will select the choir that will represent Wales at Eurovision Choir.
Wales was one of nine countries to participate in the first edition of Eurovision Choir in 2017. Côr Merched Sir Gâr finished 2nd for Wales in the contest in Riga, Latvia. In 2019 Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion represented Wales in Gothenburg, but failed to make it through to the final three.
