A total of 607 artists and 568 songs were considered as part of Unser Lied für Rotterdam, the German selection process for Eurovision 2020.
ESC Kompakt reports that in total 607 artists were in the running to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. NDR searched for potential singers and songs using Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, pairing singers with potential entries for Rotterdam.
Of the 568 songs that were considered through the selection, 84 songs were created during songwriting camps that were held during the past year.
Several rounds of voting were held using the the 100 member German Eurovision jury and the 20 member international jury of music professionals. This continued until there were 50 artists left in the selection and 34 songs.
The songs and artists were then paired into 20 different act and song combinations. A workshop was then held for each artist to record their song. These clips were then shared with the juries and the act with the highest number of points was selected to represent Germany in Rotterdam.
Unser Lied für Rotterdam will be broadcast on February 27 on ONE, the show is a 45 minute special revealing the German act and song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. For the first time since 2009 the German broadcaster has opted to internally select both their singer and song for the contest, and not involve in the German public in the selection process.

Germany was one of seven countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The country has taken part in every contest since then, apart from in 1996 when they failed to make it through the qualifying round. To date Germany has won the contest twice, the first time being in 1982 when Nicole sang “Ein Bisschen Frieden” in Harrogate, which later became a global hit. Germany didn’t win again until 2010, when Lena sang “Satellite” in Oslo. She received 9 sets of 12 points, scoring 236 points overall.
