Thomas Schreiber has revealed that the German entry for Eurovision 2020 has been determined since December 12.

The Head of Entertainment for ARD, Thomas Schreiber has revealed that the German entry for Eurovision 2020 has been determined for nearly two months. Speaking to DWDL, Mr Schreiber explained that the act and song were determined on December 12.

The early selection of the German act and song has enabled conversations regarding staging to begin far earlier than normal:

Thanks to the early decision, we were also able to address internationally renowned people much earlier than usual who have experience in staging a music act on a television stage

In January the final decision regarding the proposed staging for the act was taken. The act and song are set to be revealed on February 27 on ONE.

Germany is internally selecting its act and song for Eurovision for the first time since 2009. The dropping of a televised selection has been viewed critically in the German press, however Mr Schreiber explained that the audience for the selection and Eurovision is different. According to statistics at ARD, 93.4% of voters who voted at Eurovision did not vote during the German selection for Tel Aviv.

Germany was one of seven countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The country has taken part in every contest since then, apart from in 1996 when they failed to make it through the qualifying round. To date Germany has won the contest twice, the first time being in 1982 when Nicole sang “Ein Bisschen Frieden” in Harrogate, which later became a global hit. Germany didn’t win again until 2010, when Lena sang “Satellite” in Oslo. She received 9 sets of 12 points, scoring 236 points overall.
