The full details from the bidbook for Maastricht’s proposal to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 have been revealed this afternoon.
Hours after the announcement that Maastricht was unsuccessful in its bid to host Eurovision 2020, the bidbook has been released to the public. The city which took less than half an hour after Duncan Laurence’s victory to express an interest in hosting the contest, has revealed all the details of its bidbook.
Cost of Hosting
The municipality of Maastricht has pledged a total of 6 million Euro to the event, while the province would have invested 6.5 million Euro. Furthermore a total of 5.2 million Euro worth of resource would have been used on assisting the preparations for the competition.
In total Maastricht spent 300,000 Euro’s in funding their their bid for the 2020 contest.
The Venue
The key reason for Maastricht failing to host the competition appears to have been the strength of the ceiling. The ceiling did not have the required carrying capacity for the equipment that needed to be installed for the competition.
This lack of strength in the ceiling, as well as the lower ceiling height at the MECC, were key for Maastricht not being selected host the contest next May.
Associated Events
Eurovision Village – Would have been located at the City Meadow in Sphinxkwartier for a period of 12 days. A number of large screens for public viewing would have been erected in the village.
EuroClub – Having previously proposed that construction of a “round silo” at City Meadow in the initial proposal. Maastricht adapted the bid to suggest the Muziekgieterij instead.
Opening Ceremony – Would have taken place at the Provinciehuus in Maastricht where the Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992. The red carpet would have taken place on pontoons in the Maas river.
Insignia Ceremony – The traditional handover of the symbolic keys between host cities would have taken place at the Town Hall.
Heads of Delegations Meeting – TEFAF art fair would have been the venue for the meetings on March 9. This is the deadline for delegations to submit their songs and staging plans for Eurovision 2020.
