The way in which the results of the televote is revealed has changed for 2019, hereโs what the changes mean for the show this evening.
The order in which the points from the televote across Europe and Australia will be presented, has changed for the 2019 contest. From 2016 to 2018, the results of the televote were announced from the nation that received the lowest number of points from the televote to the highest.
This meant that no matter where a nation had placed with the juries, the televoting points were announced from lowest to highest. For example:
- Australia received 90 points from the jury in 2019 and was sitting in 12th place
- As they received just 9 points in the televote, their points were announced first
- This continued up from 26th in the televote to the 1st place, Israel was then awarded 317 points from the televote
In a change for 2019, the televoting results will be revealed from the nation that received the least points with the jury to the highest. This would have meant:
- Ukraine who placed 26th with the jury scoring just 11 points, would have been awarded 119 points first
- Portugal who was 25th would then be awarded 18 points from the televote
- This would have continued until they reached 1st with the juries
- In 2018 this would have seen Austria who scored 271 points from the jury, scored 71 points from the televote

So, if this were applied to last year’s final, Israel’s televote score would have been announced 3rd-to-last, Sweden’s next-to-last and Austria last. Israel had 212 jury points. Netta would have taken the lead at that point with her 529. Then comes Sweden, with 253 jury points and sitting 7th, probably clamoring for more than 317 televote points, only to be shocked to hear 21 come from the announcer, dropping them to 7th with 274. Austria, with 271 jury points and sitting 8th, experience a letdown after getting 94 televote points, only moving up 5 places for 3rd.
If it were applied in 2016, Russia sitting 5th in the jury tally would have taken the lead, only to be knocked off by Ukraine, whose televote points would have been announced next-to-last; and Australia, the jury leader, whose televote points would have been announced last, would have come up short.
My bad. Sweden would have STAYED 7th with their televote point announcement in 2018.
