Wales will select their participant for Eurovision Choir of the Year 2019 on April 7, with S4C revealing new details of their selection.
Côr Cymru returns to screens next month, as Wales search for Eurovision Choir of the Year 2019 commences. Côr Cymru 2019 will be used to determine the Welsh participant with five different categories competing in next years contest. The five categories of choirs taking part in the competition are:
- Children’s Choirs 16 years of age and under
- Youth Choirs under 25 years of age
- Mixed Voice Choirs
- Equal Voice Choirs (Female or Male)
- Show Choirs
The Semi-Finals for Côr Cymru are set to take place next month at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, with tickets available for free here. Five Semi-Finals will take place, they are:
- February 15 – Youth Choirs
- February 16 – Equal Voice Choirs & Mixed Choirs
- February 17 – Children’s Choirs & Show Choirs
Côr Merched Sir Gâr represented Wales at the first edition of Eurovision Choir of the Year, finishing in second place. The choir was formed of pupils from seven schools in Carmarthenshire. The choir won Côr Cymru 2017 and won the right to represent Wales at the contest.
Five nations are set to make their debut at Eurovision Choir of the Year 2019 on August 3, including the first ever appearance of Scotland at a Eurovision contest. A total of ten countries will be competing in the 2019 competition in Gothenburg, for the second edition of the EBU’s newest Eurovision competition. The ten nations taking to the stage in Sweden are:
- Belgium – RTBF
- France – France Télévisions – Debut
- Germany – WDR
- Latvia – LTV
- Norway – NRK – Debut
- Scotland – BBC Alba – Debut
- Slovenia – RTVSLO
- Sweden – SVT – Debut
- Switzerland – RTS – Debut
- Wales – S4C
Withdrawing from the competition are:
- Austria – ORF
- Denmark – DR
- Estonia – ERR
- Hungary – MTVA
Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017 was won by Carmen Manet from Slovenia. The choir performed two pieces during their six minutes on stage and beat off competition from eight other choirs from across Europe. Wales finished second in the final, while the host nation of Latvia finished third. The contest was broadcast live in ten countries across Europe and across the world online.
