RTVSLO has this evening launched EMA 2019, with changes set to be made to how the Slovenian entry will be selected.
EMA is set to return to a one off show, after semi-finals were reintroduced to the contest just two of years ago. EMA 2019 will feature up to ten artists, all vying to represent Slovenia in Tel Aviv, Israel. In the final, a jury will select the two acts that will perform in the Super Final, with the winner to be determined entirely by public televote.
Participants in EMA 2019 can only be Slovene, but their songs for the competition may be performed in any language. The Slovenian broadcaster has also stated that they may invite artists/songwriters to take part in the contest. The deadline for submissions is December 14.
Lea Sirk represented Slovenia in Lisbon this year with “Hvala, ne!” She was the first Slovene representative to qualify for the final since 2015. She finished 22nd with 64 points. An average of 358,400 viewers (19% audience share) watched the final this year on RTVSLO.

Slovenia was one of three countries to join the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. The country qualified through a specially organised selection round called “Kvalifikacija za Millstreet” which was hosted in Slovenia, seven countries competed for three spots in Eurovision 1993. The country has participated in 22 editions of the Eurovision Song Contest. Their best result came in 1995 when Darja Švajger finished 7th scoring a total of 84 points, she is closely followed by Nuša Derenda who finished 7th in the 2001 contest with 70 points.
