High expectations have been set for Fidan Huseynova as iTV spoke to local press at the reveal of “I Wanne Be Like You”.
iTV has set high expectations for Fidan Huseynova as Azerbaijan returns to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest after five years. The Azerbaijani national broadcaster held a press conference earlier this week for the reveal of “I Wanna Be Like You” which featured Fidan and the songs composer Isa Melikov.
Leyla Guliyeva who hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and is now the Head of the Department of Music, Art and Special Projects of the Ministry of Culture and Information, commented on preparations for the song ;
Fidan has played a role in the melody of the song, and we have worked for over one month now until the song was revealed.
Isa Melikov who has written a number of Eurovision entries for Azerbaijan including “Running Scared”, added;
This is a great responsibility. We have very strong opponents, there are many interesting songs in the competition. We must support Fidan as much as we can, because support for our teenager to win is important.
“I Wanna Be Like You” is sung in both Azeri and English, and was composed by Ayten Ismikhanova and Elvira Michieva, with the lyrics written by Fidan herself and Isa Melikov. Upon being selected for the contest, Fidan stated that “I’m ready for this competition. I want to successfully represent Azerbaijan and win”.
Who is Fidan Huseynova?
Twelve-year-old Fidan Huseynova was born on 24th November 2005 in Moscow, Russia. Fidan’s career started in 2014, and since then she has gone on to perform in many competitions, including the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy, where she placed 3rd. The singer attends the Baku Oxford School alongside vocal lessons and chess lessons. Notably, Fidan has performed with several artists, including Lara Fabian (Luxembourg’s 1988 Eurovision contestant), and Elnur, who represented Azerbaijan in 2008 and 2015.
In September, ITV had revealed that Fidan would represent her country in the upcoming Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

Azerbaijan debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest at the 2012 contest in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The nation had previously attempted to take part in the contest in 2008 but withdrew before the competition took place. The countries record in the contest was not as strong as in the Eurovision Song Contest. Azerbaijan’s best result came in 2013 on their last appearance in the contest where Rustam Karimov placed 7th with the song “Me and My Guitar”. Azerbaijan withdrew from the contest in 2014 for unspecified reasons.
