Italy: Sanremo 2019 Dates Confirmed

The dates for the 2019 edition of the Festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo 2019 have been revealed by RAI, as the broadcaster reveals their schedule for Autumn 2018.

Festival di Sanremo 2019 will be held between the 5th ad 9th of February. RAI confirmed the dates of the competition as it presented its autumn schedule. The show will once again be overseen by Claudio Baglioni who is the shows Artistic Director. Mr Baglioni will be working to find the most talented artists and songwriters to take part in the show for February.

Italy has yet to confirm their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, or state whether Sanremo will be used to help select the nations participant. The winner of Festival di Sanremo is offered first refusal on representing Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest. In the event that the winner declines, RAI then approaches the next suitable singer.

Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro represented Italy in Eurovision 2018. The two singers who teamed up together for the first time performed the song “Non mi avete fatto niente”, and went on to finish 5th with a grand total of 308 points. They finished 17th with the juries but ended the night in third with the public vote.

Italy debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and has participated a total of 42 times to date. Italy returned to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 having last participated in the contest in 1997, the country has withdrawn from the contest on a number of occasions in the past. Italy has won the contest twice, the first time being in 1964 and the latest being in 1990. Italy’s hosting of the contest in 1991 has been remembered as one of the most chaotic contests to date. Since their return in 2011 Italy has finished in the top 10 on six occasions.
