Armenia: Sevak On Verge of Armenia’s Second Non-Qualification

Sevak Khanagyan is currently on the edge of being the final qualifier from the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

Armenia are teetering on the edge of not qualifying for only the second time since they debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. Sevak Khanagyan and his song “Qami” are currently tenth favourite to qualify for the final, having slipped backwards during the course of the past week.

The odds from 8th to 13th are as follows:

• Belgium – Sennek – A Matter of Time
• Lithuania – Ieva Zasimauskaite – When We’re Old
• Armenia – Sevak Khanagyan – Qami
• Azerbaijan – Aisel – X My Heart
• Finland – Saara Aalto – Monsters
• Switzerland – Zibbz – Stones

Armenia peaked in the odds as 7th favourite to qualify for the final in the middle of April. Since then they have slowly slipped backwards, with them finally falling to 10th in the past day.

Armenia has only once previously failed to qualify for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2011 they were represented by Emmy and the song “Boom Boom”. She finished 12th in the first semi-final with a total of 54 points, just 1 point away from qualification.

The singer behind “Qami” is Sevak Khanagyan from Metsavan.  The singer first came onto the music scene when he took part in Glavnaya Stsena, the Russian version of The X Factor, in 2015. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals. He then went on to compete in The Voice of Russia but was again eliminated. He had more success a year later, however, as he won the seventh season of The X Factor Ukraine. He later returned to his home country to become a coach on The Voice of Armenia.

Sevak Khanagyan will represent Armenia at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal in May. He was chosen after he won Depi Evratesil 2018, the Armenian selection show, with his song “Qami”.
