TVR has this afternoon confirmed that Romania will be participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Portugal.
The Administration Board at TVR, the Romanian national broadcaster, has confirmed that Romania will participate in Eurovision 2018. The council approved approved the broadcasters participation in the contest despite the 2018 Budget for the broadcaster having not yet been finalised. Romania’s confirmation follows the reveal this morning by ORF that Austria will be participating in next years contest in Portugal.
The early confirmation of Romania’s participation in the contest has been welcomed by Irina Radu the Director General of TVR who added,
Eurovision is one of TVR’s premium programmes, and that is the reason why we will start preparations for Romania’s participation in the 2018 edition of the contest early. We will have more time to organise Selectia Nationala, to prepare the Romanian act’s show for the international stage and to attract as many sponsors and partners as possible in the project.
Ilinca and Alex Florea finished 7th in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with a total of 232 points. Romania received 12 points from the Moldovan jury and 12 points from the public vote in Moldova and Ireland. Romania finished 15th in the jury vote with 58 points but 5th in the televote with 224 points.

Romania first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, the country had tried to participate in 1993 but failed to get through the pre-qualifying round. At the 1994 contest Dan Bittman finished 21st in the final scoring 14 points, Romania didn’t make it through to another final until 1998. Romania’s best results in the contest are two third place finishes. In 2005 Luminita Anghel & Sistem finished 3rd scoring 158 points, while Paula Seling & Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo with the song “Playing with Fire”. Romania missed the 2016 contest due to TVR being removed from the EBU.
