The Director General of RTP has spoken about the broadcasters initial plans for hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.
Portugal according to Gonçalo Reis the Director General of RTP will hold the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 ‘without excess’. The Director General is excited by the opportunities that the contest not only offers to RTP in terms of entertainment, but to Portugal as a whole in terms of tourism. RTP now be closely examining the documentation provided by the EBU before the first joint meeting with the EBU is held on June 13.
At the meeting on June 13, RTP will discuss the technical requirements of hosting the contest with the EBU, with Mr Reis adding,
From a technical point of view there are many demands and RTP has to know how to do it,
The Director General does not want to be drawn into premature estimations of the cost of the event, with the Portuguese media putting a figure of 30 to 50 million Euro on hosting the contest. Mr Reis does however point out that in recent years many countries have required the construction of venues or roofs on venues to host the contest, something Portugal does not require.
He went on to add that the venue for the contest has not yet been decided. Since Portugal won the contest less than a week ago, RTP has been contacted by a number of large national brands expressing their interest in sponsoring the contest.
Mr Reis went on to say that Portugal will host the contest next year with a “tone of quality, elegance and simplicity.” Stressing that the Eurovision Song Contest should not only benefit RTP, but also Portuguese tourism and the local authorities who will be linked with the competition.
The dates of next years contest have not yet been announced, an announcement regarding the dates will be made next month following the EBU meeting with host broadcaster RTP.

Maybe they want to do the show in black and white, with floral arrangements, and balconies like the shows of the 50’s !!!! Of the Portuguese anything can be expected !!!
