MONATIK has been revealed as the acting opening the first semi final of the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine.
In contrast to previous years where the winner of last years contest has opened the contest, this years organisers have opted to open with Ukrainian multi genre artist, MONATIK. MONATIK will be performing the English version of his hit song “Kruzhyt” (Spinning) as the opening to the first semi final. The performance will see the singer showcasing his technical choreography, signature dance moves and his impressive vocals.
In November 2015 he was awarded “Breakthrough of the Year” by the music awards M1 Music Awards. In February 2016 the singer won two awards at the National Music Award in YUNA: “Best video” for the song “Kruzhyt” and “Best Album 2016” – “The Sound.” The debut video clip “Vyhodnoy” was presented in the competition program of the Berlin Music Video Awards 2017.
During the interval of the first semi final, last years winner Jamala will take to the stage for the first time this week. She is set to perform the song “Zamanyly”, the song was recorded by DakhaBrakhaat the during June of 2016. DakhaBrakha are an ethnic band who formed in 2004 and have become known for their unique style of “ethno-chaos”.
A total of 42 countries are competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Returning to the Eurovision stage are Portugal and Romania who both took a year out from the contest. Bosnia & Herzegovina and Russia have however withdrawn from the contest. Bosnia & Herzegovina has withdrawn due to financial difficulties at the national broadcaster, BHRT. While Russia has withdrawn following Julia Samoilova being banned by Ukrainian Authorities from entering Ukraine. The 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is being held on the following dates:
- Semi Final 1 – 9 May
- Semi Final 2 – 11 May
- Final – 13 May
