Romania have received poor ratings for their Eurovision selection show “Selectia Nationala”, that took place at the weekend.
On Sunday, Romania held their Eurovision selection show “Selectia Nationala”, which saw ten artists battle it out for the victory and the grand prize of representing Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Unfortunately, the show received poor TV ratings, with TVR 1 gaining 1.1% and 2.7% rating market share. This is compared to the premiere show iUmor, that broadcast at the same time as the final but on channel Antena 1, which received 11.8% rating and 25.1% market share.
Ilinca ft. Alex Florea won the final with their song “Yodel It!”, and will be representing Romania at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. They recieved 10,377 votes on the night, almost double that of the second place winner Mihai, who received 5201 points. The winner was decided by 100% jury vote during the final. The finalists qualified from a 15 artist semi-final via 100% jury vote.

Hosting the show was Iuliana Tudor and Dan Helciug. Joining them was Ioana Voicu, who hosted the Green Room. Three Eurovision 2017 participants performed in the interval of the show. These were Manel Navarro from Spain, Timebelle from Switzerland who are fronted by Romanian born Miruna Manescu and joined by Emanuel Daniel Andriescu and Samuel Forster, as well as Sunstroke Project who will be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest this year having participated for the first time in 2010 for Moldova. As well as these participants, a ABBA tribute band performed covers of SOS, Voulez-vouz, Money Money Money, Waterloo, Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen.

Romania first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, the country had tried to participate in 1993 but failed to get through the pre-qualifying round. At the 1994 contest Dan Bittman finished 21st in the final scoring 14 points, Romania didn’t make it through to another final until 1998. Romania’s best results in the contest are two third place finishes. In 2005 Luminita Anghel & Sistem finished 3rd scoring 158 points, while Paula Seling & Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo with the song “Playing with Fire”. Romania missed the 2016 contest due to TVR being removed from the EBU.
