Germany: Conchita’s staging director to work with Levina

Marvin Dietmann, the man behind the staging of Conchita’s “Rise Like a Phoenix”, is to work with Germany’s Levina on the staging of her song “Perfect Day”, it has been revealed.

Dietmann, an Austrian choreographer, has worked on several Eurovision stagings in the past, choreographing performances from Austria and Bulgaria from 2011 onward, and also taking on the role of Stage Director for the 2015 contest in Vienna. He is best-known as the staging director for Austria’s winning entry in 2014, and so it is fair to say that he knows what makes good Eurovision staging.

Outside of Eurovision, Dietmann has worked on several shows for ORF in Austria (such as talent shows “Die große Chance” and “Helden von Morgen”, and “David Hasselhoff – Live in Concert”), as well as “Fernsehgarten” and “The Dome” in Germany. He has also worked with artists such as Trackshittaz and Udo Jürgens.

Clearly, Germany are making every attempt to ensure that they fair better in Kyiv than they have over the past few years at the contest. From 2013 to 2016, Germany placed 21st, 18th, 27th and 26th, finishing in last place over the past two years and even scoring 0 points in 2015. This was their first last place since 2005 and their first 0 points since 1965. Prior to 2013 Germany had seen a few years of success in the contest, winning with Lena’s “Satellite” in 2010 and then placing 10th and 8th in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Levina won the German selection for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest last Thursday by a convincing margin. By the end of the show both of her entries – “Perfect Life” and “Wildfire” – were left in the Superfinal, beating out fellow competitors Axel Feige, Helene Nissen, Felicia Lu and Yosefin. “Perfect Life” went on to win Unser Song with an impressive 69% of the vote. She will now perform in the final of this year’s Eurovision on 13th May.
