Today, the rehearsals for this year’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) began at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre. Eight of this year’s sixteen competing artists had 30 minutes on stage today to rehearse their performances.
The artists rehearsing today were:
- Klinsmann Coleiro – “Laserlight”
- Raquela – “Ray of Light”
- Deborah C & Josef – “Tonight”
- Kevin Borg – “Follow”
- Jade Vella – “Seconds Away”
- Crosswalk – “So Simple”
- Franklin – “Follow Me”
- Rhiannon – “Fearless”
The running order of today’s rehearsals followed the running order of this Saturday’s show. Following this trend, the acts competing in the second half of the show will be rehearsing later this week in the following order:
- Miriana Conte – “Don’t Look Down”
- Shauna Vassallo – “Crazy Games”
- Janice Mangion – “Kewkba”
- Cherton Caruana – “Fighting to Survive”
- Maxine Pace – “Bombshell”
- Richard Edwards – “You”
- Brooke Borg – “Unstoppable”
- Claudia Faniello – “Breathlessly”
This year’s MESC will be hosted by TV stars Daniel Azzopardi and Charlene Mercieca, and will feature Ira Losco (Eurovision 2002 & 2016), Christina Magrin (Junior Eurovision 2016) and The Travellers as interval acts. This year’s show will also feature some changes to it’s usual format. For the first time, the winner will be decided by a 100% televote, giving the Maltese people a greater say in who will represent them in Kyiv. In previous years, the public had had a minority say in comparison to that of the international jury. Another change comes in the fact that there will only be one show this year, compared to the usual semi-final and final.
The winner of this year’s MESC will compete in the first half of the second semi-final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest on 11th May.

Malta debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 and was represented by Joe Grech with the song “Marija I-Maltija”, which finished in last place. Malta competed again in 1972 and 1975 but then withdrew until their return in 1991. During the 1990’s Malta only once finished outside of the top 10. In 1998 they came within just 7 points of victory when Chiara finished in 3rd place. She then went on to finish in 2nd place at the 2005 contest in Kyiv with “Angel”. The only other artist to reach this placing was Ira Losco in 2002, with the song “7th Wonder”.
