It’s the day of the United Kingdom selection final “Eurovision: You Decide”. We’ve spoken to four of the artists competing tonight through the week and now we bring you our interview with Darline. Darline are a country duo who hope that “Until Tomorrow” can make it all the way to Stockholm. We talked to the singers about forming Darline, what drew them to country and what their song means to them.
Thanks so much for talking to us ahead of the final this Friday, how are you both feeling now that the news is out that you are competing?
Hi, we’re both really excited to be part of the “You Decide” UK Eurovision show and it’s amazing that the news is now out! We’ve been waiting for ages to share our song “Until Tomorrow” with the public, so Monday was great to hear it on Ken Bruce show, Radio 2.
Darline only formed the middle of last year after you were introduced to each other by a member of The Shires, what was it that made the two of you click?
When we first met back in May 2015, we wrote our first song together and immediately clicked! Sharing a love of Harmonies and Country Pop music we found that we were very similar with the way we write, the artists that we listen to and were so excited to share this with someone else!
What was it that drew the two of you to the country music scene and who has inspired you most as an artist?
We both grew up on Country and Rock Music and have been inspired by bands such as Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, The Corrs etc but both discovered our love for Country in newer artists such as Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, The Civil Wars and Kelsea Ballerini… Taylor Swift and other Pop artists have also had a huge influence on our musical background, Abby especially growing up on her music from a very young age. We both love Radio 1 and Capital and the huge Pop Records on these stations and want our music to have this big sound but still have Country Lyrics with meaningful stories.
When you submitted your song into the UK selection process did you ever think you’d make it all the way to the final?
We were hopeful that the panel would like our song and were overwhelmed to know that they wanted us to be one of the Final 6! We love performing “Until Tomorrow” and hope the Public like the song as much as we enjoy playing it. It’s such an honour to be a part of the Final 6 and all the other acts and songs are brilliant, really looking forward to Friday night!
The song is titled “Until Tomorrow”, what is the inspiration for the song and what does it mean to you?
As songwriters when the song was proposed to us we fell in love with it and felt it was like something we would write. We both feel “Until Tomorrow” means about living in the moment, and holding on to something tonight as if it could disappear tomorrow. We hope the public relate to it as much as we do.
What have your family members and friends made of the news that you are competing to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest?
Our Family and Friends have been a huge support, we’ve both grown up watching Eurovision from a young age so our families love it too can’t wait to watch it this year would be amazing to be a part of the live show in Sweden!
The United Kingdom has never been represented by a country act and the last country band to participate in Eurovision came 3rd in the contest back in 2014, what would it mean to take the genre to the Eurovision Song Contest?
As songwriters we’ve always written from a Country Background, grown up on this music and it would be an honour to take this to the Eurovision with “Until Tomorrow”! The Common Linnets from the Netherlands were our favourite ever Eurovision act and we’d love for the UK to take a Country Pop act this year as it’s such a rising genre from 2015/16!
Looking to the week ahead what are you most looking forward to and what are you hopes going into the final?
We’re most looking forward to bringing “Until Tomorrow” to life on stage, after our rehearsals we’re very excited to perform this to everyone live on BBC 4 at the Forum, Kentish Town. We hope the public enjoy our song enough to want it to be this years UK entrée.
