This Saturday Iceland selects for Stockholm, we caught up with Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir who is performing alongside Guðmundur Snorri Sigurðarson this weekend in the final. We asked Þórdís about performing with Guðmundur and what it would mean to represent her country this May.
Firstly thanks for talking to us, how are you feeling ahead of the final this weekend?
I’m feeling very good about the final, I feel like I’ve already won by making it to the final!
I have to ask how did your collaboration with Guðmundur Snorri come about and what was it that made you both decide to submit a song to representing Iceland at Eurovision 2016?
The song had already been qualified when Júlí, the songwriter, asked me to sing. I was very happy to say yes of course. I only met Guðmundur Snorri in December and we’re very good friends today.
You’ve decided to sing your song in English in the final on Saturday, was it always intended that the song would eventually be performed in English?
Yes, I think it’s important that people understand the lyrics.
The song is titled “Ready to Break Free” can you tell us more about it?
The song has two stories that mix together, one about a person in need to prove oneself and one about a struggling relationship.
There are a lot of young musicians and singers in Songvakeppnin what is it in Iceland that draws young singers and musicians into music?
I didn’t know this was an Icelandic thing.. I have no idea to be honest.
What would it mean to you and Guðmundur to represent Iceland in Stockholm?
We would be thrilled to represent Iceland!
