With just over a week to go until the final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2016 we caught up with Lawrence Gray. Lawrence Gray is one of the most experienced singers in the contest this year having participated in the show on nine previous occasions, here is what he had to say:
It’s a pleasure to be able to speak to you, what was it that drew you into singing and what is it that drives you as a performer?
The love for music drove me into singing. I have been singing since I was 7 years old. As a performer I get great satisfaction in seeing a happy, appreciative audience enjoying my art and passion.
You’re well-known for your ballads, what is it about this genre that you like?
The main theme in music is love and the beauty of ballads very often represents the story of love brilliantly, conveying feelings of emotion and tenderness.
You are no stranger to song contests within Malta and also abroad, what is the appeal of the Eurovision Song Contest to you?
The Eurovision Song Contest is the most prestigious festival and if I were to win the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, I would get the chance to represent my beloved country Malta at this very important festival.
This is your tenth time in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, what does it mean to you to step out onto the MESC stage and perform in front of thousands of viewers?
This my tenth time at Eurovision. I feel very proud and honoured to do what I have been born to do.
The song you want to take to Stockholm is called “You’re Beautiful”, can you tell us more about how the song came about?
I received a call from Paul Giordmania and Fleur Balzan asking me whether I was interested in working with them for Eurovision. I accepted because it was always my dream to work with such talented and amazing people.
Your song is written by Paul Giordimaina who represented Malta back in 1991, what was it like to work with him?
It was great working with both Paul and Fleur. They are two wonderful persons who understand me as an artist.
How would it feel for you to be able to represented Malta at the 61st Eurovision Song Contest?
It would be a dream come true and a great honour for me to represent my country.
