Junior Eurovision has been the little sister to the Eurovision Song Contest now for 12 years, so if you are joining the show tonight for the first time, hereโs what to expect.
The Basics:
It may seem obvious but the contest is open to kids aged between 10 and 15 years old, all of the kids are on stage because they love to perform and sing. None of them are at the contest because a pushy parent, they are all there because they love to perform.
Songs are 3 minutes in length like the Eurovision Song Contest, songs used to be limited to 2 minutes 30 in earlier editions of the contest.
The language rule still exists at Junior Eurovision. Performers can only sing in English for 25% of the lyrics, this means that tonight you will be hearing a total of 18 different languages including Irish, Macedonian and French to name just three.
Pre-recorded backing vocals are allowed. You may be wondering where the backing vocalists are but at Junior you are allowed to rely upon pre-recorded backing vocals.
Types of Songs:
Junior Eurovision is currently at a turning point, the contest is now being aimed at teenagers meaning tonight you will hear songs that wouldnโt be inappropriate for the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest. There is however a divide in the two types of songs that you will be hearing tonight, these types are:
- The teenagers ballad โ The teenagers ballad is best summed up by this years Australian entry โMy Girlsโ by Bella Paige. The song is written by the acclaimed Delta Goodrem and the performance oozes the professionalism of modern chart music and has the staging you expect of Eurovision. The countries tonight that have teenage entries are; Australia, Netherlands, Belarus.
- Kids pop โ This is what dominated Junior Eurovision for most of the first 10 contests until 2013. These are energy filled balls of joy and happiness. Thereโs that catchy hook, the chorus that gets you humming along, itโs colourful and bright. The countries that are going for these songs are; Georgia, Armenia, Macedonia.
The Voting:
Junior Eurovision traditionally has incredibly tight. In previous years weโve gone into the last country still not knowing who will be winning the contest. On two occasions in 2007 and 2010 the winning country won by just 1 point, last year year Italy won the contest by 12 points.
Each country is awarded 12 points at the start of the voting, this is to ensure that no country ends the night with nul points.
Also there is a kids jury in this years contest, the kids jury has been at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since 2012. The kids jury is made up of one child from each country aged between 10-15, these kids have musical experience.
In which hour people start to come to the armeec today?
I believe that people attending the contest have been asked to turn up at least 2 hours before the show as there are three security checks people must go through.
