From Otto Ivar, today we catch up with Ida Bois. Ida is one of the 18 artists who is trying to represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria. Here is what Ida had to say:
You are on of 18 artists that could represent Finland in Vienna, what does that mean for you?
It means a lot to me of course I’m proud to be Finnish and I would love to represent Finland in Eurovision! That’s the reason why I’m in Uuden Musiikin kilpailu!
Your song despite me not understanding any Finnish, does sound very uplifting, can you tell us more about it?
Kumbaya is basically a self-ironic song that says literally that the world has always been like this, it’s never going to change, so why bother? But in between the lines you can see that it’s irony and the real meaning is that absolutely we can and we should do little or big things to make this world a better place!
To date you have released three albums, the first was back in 2006, what was it like for you to have your first album out?
I was pretty young at that time and a little record label had seen me sing with my piano live and they asked if want to make my own record. I took few years to write the songs for my record, and at the time it was released I was 17 years old. I was very excited for the opportunity. Since that I have released two more albums
Finnish music thanks to UMK has become increasingly popular outside of Finland, what do you think it is about the Finnish music industry that has led to that?
I don’t know actually. Maybe it’s that Finnish music is starting to sound more and more international. In my own opinion Finnish music has developed a lot and I truly hope that Finnish music gets more even attention globally in the future.
You will be one of the last artists to perform in the selection, does that add more pressure to you or not?
I think it’s the best place to perform in my opinion! I get the chance to see almost everyone before me, so I’m very happy that I will be on the last live show!
All of your music to date has been in Finnish, have you ever thought of recording in English?
No I haven’t. Because I write my own songs, I think I can make more meaningful and deep lyrics with my native language than with any other language. I listen mostly English music tho, but still want to write my songs in Finnish.
How would it feel for you to represent Finland in Vienna?
I would love it!! For me it would be a great opportunity to represent Finland in Eurovision, but also I think it would be great for Finland to bring a modern song to the contest in Finnish. Music is a universal language, so I’m sure that Eurovision viewers wouldn’t mind to hear a song in our exotic language for a change! It has been a while since our entry has sung in Finnish!
Growing up what did Eurovision mean to you?
We have a tradition to have a Eurovision gathering with friends. I don’t even know how young I was when we started, but it has lasted to this very day! We hang, eat and rate the songs ourselves of course ;D It’s a very special way to be proud of Finland and also to get to know other cultures and their music!
