Ireland: Laura O’Neill Interview

Laura O’Neill – You Don’t Remember Me
Laura O’Neill is one of the five acts taking part in this years Eurosong selection in Ireland. We caught up with her earlier in the week to talk about her experience so far.
I’d like to start by asking how you got involved in this year’s Eurosong selection?

Billy rang me back in November after seeing me perform with my wedding band ” The Fim”  at Aslans Bass player ” Rodney O’Brien’s” wedding, My partner Dazzy from ” Royseven” worked with Aslan for 10 years so he knew me through him but didn’t know I could sing. So I was so honoured and flattered to be asked by such an Established Irish Musician to be His Act on the night !!!

Now I read that it took a large number of songs before you found the song that felt right for you in Eurosong, for you do you have to connect with the song for you to give it your full support?

It’s so important to be able to relate to the song your singing , it’s very hard to fake emotion so I was really picky when we were choosing the song. It was great for me as an artist to have my creative input into the song choice.
Your song is called “You Don’t Remember Me”, can you tell us more about it?

It’s about being someone’s Second Option . Blinded by Lust you allow them to treat you badly and underestimate your self-worth. The most empowering feeling I’ve ever felt was in a relationship like that when I finally stood back and said ” hang on , I’m better than this “

Your mentor Billy has been very vocal in backing you to win the contest and go to Eurovision, what’s it like to have a mentor that is so confident in you and your abilities?

Billy is amazing , he is so supportive , he knows the business so well so its great to be on his team, but most importantly he listens to me , listens to my thoughts and opinions, he’s genuinely guiding and supporting me , we are. Team , it’s not The Billy show or The Laura Show , were working together to represent our song well and most importantly our country ” Mon Ireland”

With your performance I’ve heard mentions of a grand piano on stage, can you tell us anymore details about the performance?

It’s very slick , cool and simple – it’s all about the song! Full band , No gimmicks or distractions 🙂

This is the first big live TV performance you will have given, does that add pressure to you or are you taking it in your stride?

I have a little Pre gig routine I do regardless of where I’m singing and it just helps you deal with adrenalin , naturally ill be nervous there’s a lot a stake here , it would be massive for me to represent Ireland.

We couldn’t let this interview finish without asking you what your favourite Eurovision entry is and why?

ROCK AND ROLL KIDS – everyone always forgets about that song because of river dance that year , but its an amazingly well crafted song!!!

Finally, do you have a message for the readers of Eurovoix.com and how can they find out more about you before Eurosong?

Hey everyone thanks for taking the time to read this . I know it sounds cheesy but I would genuinely be honoured to represent Ireland and the great country we are’ please vote song 5 , I won’t let you down ✌✌

We wish Laura the best of luck, you can watch the official music video for her song below;
